The East Lansing Public Library Announces its February Calendar
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbot Road, offers a wide variety of educational opportunities, programs and events to community members of all ages. The library programs and events offered in February are as follows:
FEBRUARY SPOTLIGHT
A Motorcycling Program will take place at the East Lansing Public Library on Tuesday, Feb. 3 from 7-8:30 p.m. Local author and East Lansing resident Bill Murphy will discuss his book, “Motorcycling Across Michigan,” talk about recommended routes and show slides of his travels. This is a free event for all ages. There is no need to register.
The Teen Writing Club will meet Saturday, Feb. 7 from 3-5 p.m. Teens, grades 7-12, can come meet other writers and practice different styles of writing. The club will be facilitated by Lansing Community College instructor Dawn Newton. Refreshments will be served.
A Sharks Program will take place on Sunday, Feb. 8 from 2-4 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. Program participants will learn more about sharks from Sophie Peake, a student at MSU and shark expert. She will discuss her experience with sharks and answer questions. The program will also feature videos shot by Peake during her research. This is a free event for all ages. There is no need to register.
After-School Gaming for teens, grades 7-12, will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 10 and Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. The gaming sessions will feature Wii, Rock Band, Guitar Hero and DDR on the big screen.
The East Lansing Public Library will host Campfire Tales on Thursday, Feb. 12 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Traditional storytelling around a fire, cocoa and s’mores are in store for participants. The program is for ages 4 and up. Participants are encouraged to bring a sleeping bag for snuggling up by the fire. The program is free, but registration is required. Register two weeks in advance by contacting the library at (517) 351-2420.
The East Lansing Public Library’s annual Dragon’s Faire will take place Sunday, Feb. 22 from 2-3:30 p.m. This all-ages event will include a “Dragons A to Z” performance by Pippin Puppets, audience participation, crafts and refreshments. The event is great for young families!
A Remodel Survival Guide program will take place Monday, Feb. 23 from 7-9 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. This is a great program for those who plan to make major improvements to their home. The program will assist participants in selecting the right contractor, being proactive with expectations during the project, planning properly for contingencies and protecting family members and property during construction.
A Be the Artist Story Time will be held Saturday, Feb. 28 from 10:30-11:45 a.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. The program, for children ages 4-8, will feature stories illustrated by Eric Carle. Participants will learn about his artistic techniques and try them out with their own project. The program is free, but registration is required. Contact the library at (517) 351-2420 to register two weeks in advance.
The Teen Advisory Board will meet on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 3-5 p.m. for Board Game Day. All teens, grades 7-12, are invited to bring a favorite board game, grab a couple friends and come join in the fun.
FEBRUARY REGULARLY OFFERED PROGRAMS
Monday Movie Matinees will be hosted by the East Lansing Public Library on Feb. 9 and Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. Free popcorn will be provided while supplies last. Movies are free and intended for an adult audience only. Call (517) 351-2420 or stop by the library to find out what’s playing.
Winter StoryTime will be offered Tuesdays, 10:30-11:15 a.m.; Tuesdays, 6:30-7:15 p.m.; Thursdays, 1:30-2:15 p.m.; and Fridays, 10:30-11:15 a.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. StoryTime features stories, rhymes and a craft for ages 2-5. Note: Parents/caregivers of 2-year-olds must remain in the story time room. All other adults must remain in the library. No registration is required. *Winter StoryTime will not meet Dec. 16-Jan.2.
Winter BabyTime will be offered on Wednesdays from 10:30-11 a.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. BabyTime is a beginning story time for babies under the age of 2. Each baby must be accompanied by an adult. No siblings please. This program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. *Winter BabyTime will not meet Dec. 16-Jan. 2.
Popcorn & a Movie will take place Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. The featured film will be “Kung Fu Panda,” rated PG, 92 minutes long. Free popcorn will be provided while supplies last. Parents/guardians of preschoolers must stay with their children. Parents/guardians of children in grades 1-2 must stay in the library.
BOOK GROUPS
Books & Bagels, a book group for grades 4-6, will meet from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the East Lansing Public Library to discuss “Into the Wild” by Erin Hunter. The meeting will include discussion, bagels and an activity. Free copies of the book will be distributed while supplies last.
Book Book Revolution (BBR), a book group for teens in grades 7-12, will meet from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the East Lansing Public Library to discuss “Ask Me No Questions” by Marina Budhos. Free copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk while supplies last.
International Book Club, a book group for adults, will meet from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the East Lansing Public Library to discuss “Still Life with Rice: A Young American Woman Discovers the Life and Legacy of her Korean Grandmother” by Helie Lee. Copies of the book may be obtained through MeLCat, ELPL’s interlibrary loan service, or by asking at the reference desk. Refreshments will be served.
Book Talk, a book group for adults, will meet from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 23 at the East Lansing Public Library to discuss “The Heretic’s Daughter” by Kathleen Kent. Participants will be entered into a raffle for a free book! Copies of the book may be obtained through MeLCat, ELPL’s interlibrary loan service, or by asking at the reference desk. Refreshments will be served.
FREE COMPUTER CLASSES
A 60 Web sites in 60 Minutes class will take place Monday, Feb. 9 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. This class will highlight the best of the Web.
A Searching the Internet class will take place Thursday, Feb. 19 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the East Lansing Public Library.
An iPods, MP3 Players & Digital Music class will take place Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library.
