East Lansing Issues Winter Reminders

EAST LANSING, Mich. – East Lansing community members should keep a number of things in mind as the holidays approach and snowfalls become more abundant in the region.

- Snow must be cleared from sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall and salt or another form of abrasive must be used within 12 hours after ice has formed. Owners or occupants of a house, building or lot are directly responsible for clearing sidewalks adjacent to their property. Community members who rent a house or building should discuss with their landlord who will be responsible for clearing adjacent sidewalks. Both parties can receive fines if sidewalks are not cleared.

- If community members are leaving for more than one day (i.e. during the holiday season), the City suggests having a neighbor or friend look after their property in case of snow accumulation or ice.

- Seniors can contact the Prime Time Seniors’ Program at (517) 337-1113 for assistance with ice/snow removal. Prime Time provides referrals and also has two chore service members that can assist seniors with ice/snow removal.

- If community members are leaving their homes to travel this holiday season, they should remember to securely lock their doors and windows to keep intruders out. Mail delivery should also be stopped. Mail piling up is a sign of an unoccupied house. The heat should also be kept on to avoid having a pipe burst while away.

Community members with questions can contact East Lansing City Hall at (517) 337-1731.
