The East Lansing Public Library Announces its January Calendar
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbot Road, offers a wide variety of educational opportunities, programs and events to community members of all ages. The library programs and events offered in January are as follows:
JANUARY SPOTLIGHT
After-School Gaming for Teens will take place at the East Lansing Public Library on Tuesday, Jan. 6 and Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Teens, grades 7-12, are encouraged to participate.
The Teen Writing Club will meet on Saturday, Jan. 10 from 3-5 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. Teens, grades 7-12, are encouraged to come meet with other writers and practice different styles of writing. The meeting will include a friendly discussion, a sharing of writing and refreshments. The meeting will be led by LCC instructor Dawn Newton.
Stories on the Move will take place on Saturday, Jan. 10 from 10:30-11:15 a.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. Children, ages 2-5, are invited to enjoy 30-45 minutes of stories, music and movement. Caregivers of 2-year-olds must stay in the room. Other caregivers must stay in the library.
The East Lansing Public Library will host a Should I Stay or Should I Go? Smart Home Investments program on Monday, Jan. 12 from 7-9 p.m. The program will educate community members on how to get the most out of their home, whether staying for 30 days or 30 years. The program will include how to build value for future sale through major upgrades and how to save monthly by improving the efficiency of a home.
The Teen Advisory Board will meet Saturday, Jan. 17 from 3-5 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library to make valentines for veterans, patients in hospitals, nursing home residents and anyone else who needs something to brighten their day! Teens, grades 7-12, are encouraged to attend.
A Warm up to Michigan program will be held Thursday, Jan. 22 from 6-7 p.m. at the Spartan Village Community Center, 1543 C Spartan Village in East Lansing. The East Lansing Public Library will be collaborating with Michigan State University, the Family Resource Center and other local organizations to bring participants the best of Michigan – including places to go, state history, crafts, refreshments and more.
A Sign Language Story Time will be held Saturday, Jan. 24 from 2-3 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. Children of all ages are encouraged to join in learning signs, listening to (and watching) a story and enjoying finger food. Please register for this program by calling (517) 351-2420 beginning two weeks in advance.
An Amazing Animals: Lizards program will be held at the East Lansing Public Library on Sunday, Jan. 25 from 2-4 p.m. Live lizards and the experts that study them in the Caribbean will show how the behaviors of lizard species differ from each other and how brain function and behavior differs between sexes.
A Homework Help session will take place Monday, Jan. 26 from 5-7 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. This free drop-in tutoring program is for students in grades K-8. Tutoring services are provided by Michigan State University’s Student Michigan Education Association.
A Read to the Dogs program will take place Saturday, Jan. 31 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. Children, ages 5 and up, are encouraged to sign up to read to a therapy dog. Each session will last 10 minutes. Space is limited. Please register for this program by calling (517) 351-2420 beginning two weeks in advance.
JANUARY REGULARLY OFFERED PROGRAMS
Monday Movie Matinees will be hosted by the East Lansing Public Library on Jan. 12 and Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. Free popcorn will be provided while supplies last. Movies are free and intended for an adult audience only. Call (517) 351-2420 or stop by the library to find out what’s playing.
Winter StoryTime will be offered Tuesdays, 10:30-11:15 a.m.; Tuesdays, 6:30-7:15 p.m.; Thursdays, 1:30-2:15 p.m.; and Fridays, 10:30-11:15 a.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. StoryTime features stories, rhymes and a craft for ages 2-5. Note: Parents/caregivers of 2-year-olds must remain in the story time room. All other adults must remain in the library. No registration is required. *Winter StoryTime will not meet Dec. 16-Jan.2.
Winter BabyTime will be offered on Wednesdays from 10:30-11 a.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. BabyTime is a beginning story time for babies under the age of 2. Each baby must be accompanied by an adult. No siblings please. This program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. *Winter BabyTime will not meet Dec. 16-Jan. 2.
Popcorn & a Movie will take place Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. The featured film will be “Snow Buddies,” rated G, 87 minutes long. Free popcorn will be provided while supplies last. Parents/guardians of preschoolers must stay with their children. Parents/guardians of children in grades 1-2 must stay in the library.
BOOK GROUPS
Books & Bagels, a book group for grades 4-6, will meet from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the East Lansing Public Library to discuss “The Homework Machine” by Dan Gutman. The meeting will include discussion, bagels and an activity. Free copies of the book will be distributed while supplies last.
Book Book Revolution (BBR), a book group for teens in grades 7-12, will meet from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the East Lansing Public Library to discuss “Things Not Seen” by Andrew Clements. Free copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk while supplies last.
International Book Club, a book group for adults, will meet from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the East Lansing Public Library to discuss “The Camel Bookmobile” by Masha Hamilton. The group will have a phone chat with the author.
Book Talk, a book group for adults, will meet from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 26 at the East Lansing Public Library to discuss “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini. Participants will be entered into a raffle for a free book!
FREE COMPUTER CLASSES
A Basic Skills Computer Class will take place Thursday, Jan. 8 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. This class is for individuals who have never used a computer.
A Digital Television Workshop will take place Thursday, Jan. 15 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. This workshop is for individuals who wish to be prepared for the switch to digital television.
An Intermediate Microsoft Word Class will take place Thursday, Jan. 22 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the East Lansing Public Library.
A Gadgets Workshop: Flash Drives & Digital Storage will take place Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 7-8:30 p.m.
