City to Collect Holiday Lights for Recycling, Promote Use of LED Holiday Lights
EAST LANSING, Mich. – In an effort to promote environmentally friendly holiday decorating this season, the City will be accepting holiday light strands for recycling and will also be issuing coupons for 15 percent off the purchase of energy efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) holiday lights from
www.HolidayLEDs.com
.
All East Lansing residents are eligible to participate in this new program. Residents can recycle their old holiday light strands by dropping them off at the Department of Public Works, 1800 E. State Road, during regular business hours starting Nov. 20. Residents can also recycle their old holiday light strands in their curbside recycling bin on their normal collection day during the week of Dec. 1. Residents who participate will receive a coupon from
www.HolidayLEDs.com
for 15 percent off the purchase price of new LED holiday lights.
LED holiday lights can use up to 95 percent less energy than traditional incandescent lights. LED holiday lights also produce little heat, which makes them less of a fire risk, and they are not made with glass or filaments, which makes them less prone to break than glass bulbs. LED holiday lights also can last up to seven times longer than traditional lights and, while they are more expensive to purchase, they make up for a higher price over time with a reduced operational cost.
The City encourages all residents to put the environment first this holiday season through participation in this new program. Following the same suit, the City will decorate its holiday tree – located in Ann Street Plaza – with energy efficient LED lights this holiday season.
