ELPD Offers 10 Simple Steps to Reduce the Risk of Becoming a Victim of Theft

EAST LANSING, Mich. – In response to a significant increase in theft in the East Lansing community, the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) is currently asking residents to do a few simple things to help minimize the risk of becoming a victim of theft.

ELPD has seen a significant increase in theft of televisions, laptop computers, video game systems (X-BOX, WII and PS3) and credit/debit cards in the past few months. The majority of the recent cases of theft have been crimes of opportunity, with no forced entry. The following are 10 simple steps residents can take to minimize their risk of becoming a victim of theft:

1.) If having a party, dedicate one locked room for valuables. Make sure no one enters the designated room or unlocks the door to the designated room while the party is going on. Theft typically occurs during “open house parties,” where the homeowner does not know everyone at the residence.

2.) Lock portable valuables up when gone, especially laptop computers, wallets or purses. It’s important to lock these items away even if leaving for a short period of time.

3.) When at home and asleep, keep valuables in your bedroom and keep the door to the bedroom locked.

4.) Lock doors and windows, even if living in a second- or third-floor apartment.

5.) Purchase a wooden dowel (about $2) to put in your sliding glass patio door when it is locked. Wooden dowels can also be placed in windows to keep them from being opened further.

6.) Call 911 right away if you see someone in your home or apartment that you do not know. ELPD has seen significant delays in 911 calls from some victims.

7.) If someone is in your apartment complex and they appear to be out of place, or they are there for no apparent reason, call the police.

8.) Write down all serial numbers to electronic valuables that are in your possession.

9.) Contact your landlord if you are having any problems with the locking mechanisms on your doors or windows.

10.) If you are going away for holiday break or you are going to be gone for an extended period of time (even a weekend), take valuables along. In addition, be sure to put a light on a timer and/or have a neighbor shovel your driveway and sidewalk. It is important to make it appear that someone is home.

ELPD urges residents to take a few extra seconds to minimize their risk of becoming a victim. Residents are encouraged to contact the East Lansing Police Department Detective Bureau at (517) 319-6834 to learn more about home safety.
