Poetry Reading at (SCENE) Metrospace to Showcase Diane Wakoski and the Sapphos

EAST LANSING, Mich. – A special poetry reading will take place at (SCENE) Metrospace, 110 Charles St., on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.

The reading will showcase the poetic talent of many of East Lansing’s local poets, including renowned American poet Diane Wakoski. Wakoski is a professor at MSU who made a name for herself early on in life as part of the “deep image” movement. She has published more than 40 books of poetry and has been honored with a Fulbright fellowship, a Michigan Arts Foundation award and grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Michigan Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts.

The Sapphos, a group of Wakoski’s former MSU students, will also read at the event. The Sapphos group members have been meeting on a monthly basis with Wakoski for close to ten years to further hone their poetry skills. Members reading on Nov. 22 will include: Heather Abner, MJ Arredondo, Courtney Chapin, Ruth Mowry, Carrie Preston and Sarah Sword.

(SCENE) Metrospace is located at 110 Charles St. in the colorful Division Street parking structure, next door to Georgio’s Pizza. (SCENE)’s hours are Thursdays from 2-5 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 2-6 p.m. and Sundays from noon- 4 p.m. during scheduled exhibits.
