Library Announces its November Calendar

 

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Every month there is a wide variety of educational opportunities, programs and events offered to community members at the East Lansing Public Library (ELPL), 950 Abbot Road. Please note the following ELPL programs and events for the month of November:

NOVEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Stories on the Move will take place at ELPL on Nov. 22 from 10:30-11:15 a.m. The event will include 30-45 minutes of stories, movement and music for ages 2-5. Note: Parents/caregivers of 2-year-olds must remain in the activity room. All other adults must stay in the library.

LEGO Creation Day will celebrate 50 years of LEGOs. The activity will be held on Nov. 2 from 2-4 p.m. It will allow kids to create LEGO projects that will be displayed in the library. This activity is for ages 5 and up.

After School Gaming, for teens in grades 7-12, will take place Nov.12 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library. Participants can enjoy Wii, Rock Band, Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) on the big screen. No registration is required.

The Teen Advisory Board will meet on Nov. 22 from 3-5 p.m. Teens (grades 7-12) will have the opportunity to save money during the holiday season by making gifts for their friends and family. Supplies and instructions on how to craft the homemade gifts will be provided.

NOVEMBER REGULARLY OFFERED PROGRAMS

Homework Help is offered on Mondays from 5-7 p.m. for grades K-8. Homework Help is a free drop-in tutoring program provided by Michigan State University’s Student Michigan Education Association. *Homework Help will not meet on Nov. 24.

Monday Movie Matinees will be hosted by the East Lansing Public Library on Nov. 3 and 17 at 1 p.m. Free popcorn is provided while supplies last. Movies are free and intended for an adult audience only. Call (517) 351-2420 or stop by the library to find out what’s playing.

Fall StoryTime will be offered Tuesdays, 10:30-11:15 a.m.; Tuesdays, 6:30-7:15 p.m.; Thursdays, 1:30-2:15 p.m.; and Fridays, 10:30-11:15 a.m. StoryTime features stories, rhymes and a craft for ages 2-5. Note: Parents/caregivers of 2-year-olds must remain in the story time room. All other adults must remain in the library. No registration is required. *Fall StoryTime will not be held during the week of Thanksgiving.

Fall BabyTime will be offered on Wednesdays from 10:30-11 a.m. BabyTime is a beginning story time for babies under the age of 2. Each baby must be accompanied by an adult. No siblings please. This program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. *Fall BabyTime will not be held on Nov. 26.

Free Computer Classes are offered at the East Lansing Public Library on a monthly basis. Please register in advance for all classes by calling (517) 351-2420. A Wireless Home Network class will take place on Nov. 5 from 7-8:30 p.m. Instructions will be given on how to set up a wireless network, including equipment, terminology, security and troubleshooting. A Digital Television Workshop will also be hosted by ELPL. The Nov. 6 event will focus on how to get ready for the switch to digital television. The Digital Television Workshop will run from 7-8:30 p.m. In addition, ELPL will help you give blogging a try with a Blogging for Beginners workshop on Nov. 10 from 10-11:30 a.m.

The Teen Writing Club will meet in November. This new program is led by Lansing Community College (LCC) instructor Dawn Newtown. For more information, e-mail mhennes@cityofeastlansing.com.

BOOK GROUPS

A Book Book Revolution group will meet on Nov. 22 from 2-3 p.m. The book Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve will be the topic of discussion for the hour. Free copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk while supplies last.

Books and Bagels will be held on Nov. 8 from 2-3 p.m. With a bagel in hand, it will be time to discuss Rules by Cynthia Lord and partake in a craft or activity. This program is aimed for children, grades 4-6.

The International Book Club will meet on Nov. 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. The club will focus on Finding Refuge: My Journey from the Middle East to Michigan by Shirin Kambin Timms, which describes the author’s father’s experiences emigrating from Iran to the U.S. The author will join the group for discussion. Refreshments will also be served. Copies of the book may be obtained through MeLCat (the interlibrary loan service) or by asking at the Reference Desk.

Book Talk will meet on Nov. 24 at 10:30 a.m. At the group meeting The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood will take center stage. There will be a chance to enter a raffle for a free book. Refreshments will also be served. Copies of the book may be obtained through MeLCat (the interlibrary loan service) or by asking at the Reference Desk.

Bilingual Story Time will be held on Nov. 15 from 2-3 p.m. Italian stories, treats and crafts will be featured on this day. All ages are welcome to participate in this cultural story time. Please register to participate in this event. Registration begins two weeks prior to the event.
