Cedar Fest Sentencing Update: 18-Year-Old Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail

 
EAST LANSING, Mich. – An 18-year-old Bloomfield Hills man convicted of damaging property during the recent Cedar Fest riot in East Lansing was sentenced yesterday, Aug. 6 to 30 days in the Ingham County Jail.

Phillip Garcia, 18, had previously entered a plea of guilty to the misdemeanor offense and was sentenced by East Lansing 54-B District Court Judge David L. Jordon. In addition to his jail sentence, Garcia was put on probation for two years and ordered to pay $2,214.40, in fines, costs and assessments, including $1,074.40 in restitution for expenses incurred by the City of East Lansing, expenses incurred by assisting agencies and damage to private property during the riot.

Garcia was granted credit for performing 40 hours of community service prior to sentencing. He was ordered to complete a substance abuse treatment program, attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at least twice per week and to submit daily to a breath test to confirm his abstinence from alcohol. Jordon also prohibited Garcia from entering any Michigan public community college, college or university campus for a period of one year.
